Haliburton and District Lions Club Enchanted Forest Service Project April 2021

The Haliburton Lions Enchanted Forest Service Project is, once again, up and running. We are gathering items for Loose Parts Play which will be part of the Construction Zone in this delightful children's play area.

Loose Parts is a wonderful term that speaks to “loose parts” in our environment that can be used to empower our children’s creativity. Many play experts and early childhood educators have adapted the theory of loose parts play. Loose parts are materials that can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, lined up, and taken apart and put back together in multiple ways. Loose parts can be used alone or combined with other materials. There is no set of specific directions for materials that are considered loose parts. A term strongly connected to loose parts is open-ended. Open ended materials, environments, and experiences encourage problem solving and are child centered. Children involve themselves in concrete experiences using loose parts.

In the Enchanted Forest at Abbey Gardens the Loose Parts will include both natural and man-made items. I have included some pictures so that you will get a better idea of what loose parts play might look like as well as the materials that are needed.

I would like to invite you, our wonderful Highlands community to assist us in gathering loose parts. Here the starter list things we need:

  • One large deck box approximately 4 feet long

  • Two smaller deck boxes or similar containers

  • PVC pipes

  • Round rocks

  • Lumber of varying sizes but not more than 3 feet long

  • Wood rounds – slices of trees

  • Wooden spools
